St. Margaret’s Episcopal School, 31641 La Novia Ave, San Juan Capistrano, CA 92675
About
Special Camp offers three one-week sessions that include additional days set aside for counselor training seminars and meetings. The program focuses on learning abilities, communication skills, emotional well-being, and social development.
• Schedule: Three one-week sessions, with extra days for counselor training seminars and meetings
Special Camp was founded by Father Mike Wallens in 1992 to address the scarcity of resources for school-age children with disabilities in the community. Over more than 30 years, it has grown from 30 to over 150 campers and counselors every summer, using a one-to-one ratio that was designed with the help of parents of children with disabilities and experts in special education. The leadership team includes Executive Director Lindsay Eres, Director of Operations Katie Schwartz, Camp Nurse Elouise Garrovillas, RN, and several coordinators who oversee campers, counselors, development, special events, and relations. The program states the mission: “With service, opportunity, and love, we will continue to work toward inspiring future generations to eliminate the stigma associated with this beautiful community.”
