Special Camp offers three separate one-week sessions each summer. The program focuses on learning abilities, communication skills, emotional well-being, and social development. Its one-to-one ratio was designed with the help of parents of children with disabilities and experts in the field of special education.
• Schedule: Three, one-week sessions
Special Camp was founded by Father Mike Wallens in 1992 to address the scarcity of resources for school-age children with disabilities in the community. Over more than 30 years, it has grown from 30 to over 150 campers and counselors every summer. The leadership team includes Executive Director Lindsay Eres; Associate Director Katie Schwartz; Camp Nurse Elouise Garrovillas, RN; Assistant Director, Participant Engagement & Experiences Catie Sherlock; Camper Coordinator Ellie Kosoff; Counselor Coordinator Mason Allison; Development Coordinator Mitchell Allison; Assistant Camper Coordinator Gavin Taylor; Assistant Counselor Coordinator Ali James; Special Events Coordinator Beau Chiasson; and Relations Coordinator Sloane Johnson. The program’s mission statement is: “With service, opportunity, and love, we will continue to work toward inspiring future generations to eliminate the stigma associated with this beautiful community.”
